Next Rated Interview with Sweet Music Concert Top 6 Finalist “CHARLEMAGN3”

TELL US ABOUT YOU?
Charles

Ifeanyi Mbah (Charlemagn3). A self-taught, passionate guitarist and singer based in blues, rock and native stylings. I’m from Imo, but I grew up most of my life in Enugu, Nigeria and was influenced by such greats as Slash, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan and indigenous acts such as Fiokee. I’ve worked worked on a variety of projects and I’m currently working on a full length album

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY/EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND?
My dad is Paul, my mum is Ngozi, both from Imo. Father is an engineer and my mum is a secretary/trader. I schooled in Calabar and Enugu, and got tertiary Training at nnamdi azikiwe University awka. Just completed my program this year.

TELL US MORE ABOUT CREW/LABEL? If YOU HAVE ANY
I’m currently not signed to any label. But I have a small music crew/band called Six Fingers. We’re a group of guitarists and vocalists that support each other and perform today

WHAT INSPIRED YOUR PASSION FOR MUSIC AND WHO HAS BEEN THERE SUPPORTING YOU FROM THE BEGINNING?
Actually, right from when I was little. The sounds that caught me the most were the sounds of the guitar. I would play “air guitar” and sometimes sing along. The song that made me buy my first guitar and actually start playing along to music was “welcome to the jungle” by guns n roses. Initially, it was my friends that were surprised by how fast I learned to play, my passion and dedication. Not long after I began singing and composing music of my own. My father has always been a very great supporter, my brother and my sister as well. Some friends, like Fozter (also an artist) and Ebuka, Sandra, Bishop and Solomon have been very big supports too.

IN WHAT YEAR DO YOU START MUSIC AS A CAREER?
I started to take my music very seriously this year and I see myself going places

IS MUSIC WORK HARD?
To an extent. For me, the greatest challenge is finding shows at this point and sponsoring myself to attend. It’s difficult because I have to get the right gear and transport all of them myself to each show venue and set them up before I can even perform. Also, getting the music to as many ears as possible can be tasking. I do believe that if the passion is strong, all challenges can be easily overlooked

HOW MANY SONGS HAVE YOU RECORD & WHICH AMONG THEM IS YOUR HIT SONG?
I have recorded at least 10 songs now , but I’ve released only one. And I’m still promoting that one. I believe that one, which is called “Wall of Skin” is my hit at the moment. Because it has a catchy vocal pattern, rap elements, blues, afro, Rock and soul. The guitar lines are very unique too and the fusion of genres. It’s a real treat

WHICH PRODUCERS HAVE YOU WISH TO WORK WITH?
Masterkraft, Coublon, KillerTunez, Don Jazzy

HOW HAS MUSIC BEING PAYING YOU SINCE THEN TILL NOW?
Actually, not a dime yet(smiles)

WHAT ARE THREE THINGS YOU CANT LIVE HOUSE WITHOUT?
My guitar, my pedal and my amplifier

WHAT WAS YOUR PARENT REACTION WHEN YOU CHOOSE MUSIC?
My father was very supportive, but my mother was highly skeptical(laughs)

LIKE OTHERS WHERE NOT BORN WITH SILVERSPOON WHERE YOU?
I wasn’t born with a silverspoon, but I’ve never had to beg for anything till now.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE COMPETITION IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY?

It’s quite tough in the sense that the Nigerian public are too attached to a single genre, afro. And I don’t base on afro, so it’s a challenge exposing the crowd to something new. But that’s exactly what I would love to do

TELL US ABOUT THE PROJECT YOU ARE WORKING ON CURRENTLY?
I’m working on an EP, that would have afro and blues/soul/rock numbers. the current track I’m working on is an afro track with soul/blues elements, it’s very dancy and the sounds are mad. I haven’t written up lyrics though

ANY CHALLENGES ON BUILDING UP YOUR DREAMS?
The money aspect has always been a big challenge, especially considering the fact I’m still upcoming and I need to look after my gear. Also, pushing the music is a challenge and getting the right exposure. Getting shows can be tough too. At this point, I produce my own music so I’m actually multitasking a lot

WE HEARD YOU HAVE A LOT OF FANS, IS THAT RIGHT?
(Laughs) yes. I would have a lot more soon though

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF FIVE YEARS FROM NOW?
I see myself performing at big concerts and moving crowds with my unique blend of music. I see myself with a great label, I see myself highly sought after for guitar tracking and for vocals too. I see myself with a unique set of fans that I can connect with and give my very best at every point in time.

WHAT MAKES YOU UNIQUE FROM OTHER ARTIST?
I’m a guitarist and singer. I don’t base strictly on afro. I branch out quite a lot to bring new sounds to the Nigerian music scenes, and new vocal patterns. I have a low register and tend to bring a bit of Western feel to my music as well. As for the instrumentals, they are highly experimental and tasty. I think I’m very unique right now and with the right promotion my music would cause a lot of innovation.

WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE ARTIST IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY YOU WISH TO WORK WITH?
Asa, Davido, Fiokee, Rema, Joeboy, Wizkid, Falz, Burna Boy, Chris Brown, Axl Rose, Johnny Drille, Fozter, Runtown, Olamide, Brymo, Korede Bello, John Mayer, Gary Clark Jr. And a host of others

HOW DO YOU FEEL WHEN PEOPLE LOVE AND ENCOURAGE YOU?
It fills me with hope and courage to move on. Sometimes when I feel skeptical about my work and I see how much it moves someone it makes me feel very grateful. To all that have supported me so far, I’m highly appreciative

HOW WOULD YOU GO ABOUT ACCOMPLISHING THIS?
I plan to promote and push myself as much as possible, improve as a musician with each new venture. I’d love to reach the right ears, willing to sponsor me and my brand and push my work onto the big stage and screens. I plan to stay consistent and dedicated to my music and my fans, and at all times never forget where I’ve come from and who was there from the beginning.

AS YOU ARE STARTING OUT YOUR CAREER IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY, WHAT STEPS DO YOU PLAN ON TAKING TO REACH YOUR GOAL?
Develop a solid fanbase in the centre that would be willing to help me at every turn.
Keep rehearsing day by day to stay on top of my trade, but as a guitarist and vocalist.
Keep finding every means to perform and showcase my craft
Stay consistent, and humble
Network as much as possible and meet the right people
Get signed to a label, and get sponsorship
Give it my very best

DO YOU HAVE ANY HIDDEN TALENTS?
I understand things quite easily.
I play video games quite well.
I actually produce all my music.
I cook well (laughs)
I’m above average at using the computer and navigating the internet.

YOUR ADVICE FOR UPCOMING ARTIST?
Stay humble, and master your craft. Like my boss , IKing says, “if you’re good, you’re good”. It’s just a matter of consistency and believing in yourself. It’s very tough here in Nigeria, but have something you believe in. Your faith and your works would speak for you. Don’t be afraid to mingle with new people, the opportunities wouldn’t come from the places you’d expect. Try to innovate, distinguish your brand from everyone else and just do your thing. Don’t worry about being perfect, just worry about improving daily.

ANY LAST WORD TO YOUR FANS?
Thank you all so much, I wouldn’t be here if you never believed in my work and in me. I promise to stay consistent and not relent in terms of quality or my style of music. I’d like to have your support now and continually as this is a critical point for me. Once again, thank you! I love you guys!

IF YOUR ARE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TODAY TO SEEK FOR ONE THING FROM US NAIJATRAFFIC MEDIA , WHAT WOULD THAT BE ?
Please push my music to as many ears as possible! Both within and outside the country!
